Most important announcements of Google I/O 2019

Google I/O is an annual conference with announcements of what’s to come in terms of hardware and software by one of the biggest tech companies in the world.

From Android’s new features and Artificial Intelligence to innovations that will help developers update their products, services and apps.

At this year’s event – following last year’s trend – one of the main topics was privacy and user experience.

Let’s check the biggest highlights for app developers.

Similar apps (Peer Groups)

Have you ever stopped to think about how’s your app doing compared to others? With this new Google update you can now compare your metrics with similar apps.

The feature is already available in the tabs “Android Vitals” and in “Reviews”. The platform selects some apps but you can change to a new group that you want to monitor and compare.

There are some rules to use the feature. You can not compare your own apps with one another, for example. But the tool is very useful and easy to use.

You can check more info about it on Google’s support page.

App size

Having an app with optimized size increases your conversion rates thus Google gives more relevance in its search engines for apps with optimized size.

Google has added to dashboard, under the Android Vitals tab, information about the size of your app, with comparisons between peer groups.

On the “statistics” tab, you can also evaluate “app download size” and “app size on the device at the time of install”.

New Google Play review system

Google Play is reshaping how reviews are calculated and displayed. So far, the note shown is the average of all app reviews.

This means that if your app had bad reviews for some time even if you improve it you’d have trouble increasing your score.

With the new algorithm however, the displayed score will be the average of new reviews. It all depends on how’s your app in its latest version.

The change will be shown to users as of August 2019, but developers can see the new notes already.

So use this opportunity to perform enhancement and engagement actions to improve the new note if it’s low.

Suggested answer

Google will also suggest answer to user feedback based on artificial intelligence. For now this functionality is only available for English but will soon be available for other languages.
